Read this before treating a stain
The Stain Library provides general researched information. It does not replace the care label, product label, manufacturer instructions, safety data, poison advice, a material specialist or a qualified professional cleaner. No online method can account for every dye, finish, blend, previous treatment or hidden layer.
Non-negotiable rules
- Never mix cleaning products.
- Never combine chlorine bleach with acids such as vinegar, or with ammonia or ammonia-containing cleaners.
- Do not use heat, bleach, a solvent or an abrasive unless the specific item and product instructions permit it.
- Keep products away from children and pets. Ventilate and use protective equipment where the label requires it.
- Never transfer a cleaner into an unlabelled container or use more than directed.
Test—but understand the limit
A hidden-area test may reveal colour transfer, texture or finish damage. It cannot make a prohibited or incompatible product safe. Wait until the test area is dry before judging it.
Stop and seek help
Stop if colour transfers, fumes occur, a finish changes, fibres distort, the area becomes over-wet, or the substance/material is unknown. Use professional advice for hazardous spills, leather, suede, natural stone, antiques, valuable items, specialist finishes, large areas or a failed first cautious treatment.
Results and responsibility
You decide whether guidance is suitable for your item and use any method at your own risk. To the extent permitted by law, The Stain Library is not responsible for damage or loss arising from use of the information. Nothing in this notice excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
