Before you start
1Read the care labelIts restrictions take priority.
2Use the exact product directionsMore product is not better.
3Never mix cleanersRinse only where directed.
Act now
For a fresh spill
- Blot up as much coffee as possible with a dry white cloth or plain white kitchen roll. Keep changing to a clean section.
- Work from the outside of the spill towards the centre. Press and lift; do not scrub, brush or rub the pile.
- If a mark remains, check the carpet maker’s instructions and pre-test a WoolSafe-approved spot remover in an inconspicuous area.
- Put the approved product on a white cloth as directed and blot the mark. Repeat patiently while transfer continues.
- Use a separate cloth lightly dampened with clean water to blot out remaining product residue. Do not over-wet.
- Blot as dry as possible with clean white towels, align the pile gently and allow it to dry naturally.
Gather first
What you will need
- Clean white absorbent cloths or plain white kitchen roll
- Clean water
- A WoolSafe-approved spot remover if needed
- Dry white towels for the final blot
Re-wet carefully
If the stain has dried
- Do not soak a dried mark. Begin with a small, controlled application of a compatible WoolSafe-approved spot remover on a white cloth.
- Blot, rinse by light clean-water blotting and blot dry. If little improvement occurs, stop and use a WoolSafe-approved service provider.
Know the limit
If it is old, washed or heated
- An old coffee mark may have reached deep into the pile or backing. Home treatment can create spreading, browning or over-wetting.
- Arrange an assessment by a cleaner experienced with wool carpet instead of increasing product strength or moisture.
Protect the item—and yourself
Do not use
- Do not scrub, brush or rub the wool pile.
- Do not pour cleaner directly onto the carpet or saturate the backing.
- Do not use washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, bleach or an unapproved household remedy on wool carpet.
- Do not mix products or apply heat to speed drying.
Stop if dye transfers, the pile distorts, an odour or colour change appears, the backing becomes wet, or the spill is large, hot, old or keeps returning.
Why wool changes the method
Wool is an absorbent natural fibre and the carpet is a layered construction. Strong alkalinity, scrubbing and excess water can create colour, texture, shrinkage or backing problems that are more difficult to correct than the original spill.
Coffee containing milk
Treat it promptly, but keep the same moisture limits. Because dairy adds protein and fat, a compatible professional or WoolSafe-approved product may be more appropriate than repeated water-only blotting.
A returning brown mark
If the spot looks clean and then reappears as it dries, liquid may be wicking back from deeper in the pile or backing. Stop adding moisture and contact an appropriate carpet cleaner.
